Argentina's government has again requested the IACHR to ensure former social leader Milagro Sala serves her corruption sentence in prison, arguing she violated her house arrest conditions.

Argentina Requests Former Leader to Serve Prison Sentence

Argentina's government has reiterated its request to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) for former Kirchnerist social leader Milagro Sala to serve her corruption sentence in prison. Since 2017, Sala has been under house arrest after being convicted for illicit association, fraud against the public administration, extortion, and threats while leading the Tupac Amaru organization. In an official statement, the government argued: 'Sala violated the conditions of her house arrest by changing her location without the judge's authorization. This activated the monitoring system and led to control measures.' The government stated that Sala has defined the Justice's actions as 'harassment'. The official communiqué asserts that 'the Argentine Republic complies with its international obligations' and described the IACHR's measure as 'a clear benefit that keeps a criminal who stole from the poor in the comfort of their home.' The document added that 'human rights are to protect people, not to shield convicts and guarantee their impunity, much less when they enriched themselves at the expense of law-abiding citizens.' The Undersecretariat for Human Rights reaffirmed the government's position, led by President Javier Milei, on ending privileges for convicts with firm sentences.
